Life is what you make it

Life is what you make it: a novel by Preeti Shenoy

Preeti Shenoy have always wondered me. She has an excellent talent of story telling with her deep observations and simple way of narration. 'Life is what you make it' is her second book after '34 bubblegums and candies'. I had heard girls saying about Durjoy Datta (romance fiction writer) He knows what rings in a girl's head. I would confidently say Preeti Shenoy knows what rings in a boy's head. Her works reveal her in-depth understanding of male psychology.

The novel is a story of love, hope and determination. Story teller is Ankita and she lives in a very conservative family where boys are not allowed to call or visit her.  But she manages to keep in touch with her best friend Vaibhav who has got admission in IITD through letters and sometimes through telephone without falling into notice of her parents.

She gets new friends as she gets into St.Agnes. Cochin  where she adores the position of arts secretary through college election.  Being in charge of  arts festivals she had opportunities to participate and supervise several inter collegiate arts fests.  She gets a new friend Abhi who is from Mahavir college. Abhi instantly falls in love with Ankita. As he tries to convince her his love she mentally feels she was committed to Vaibhav so she tries her best to avoid him. But slowly Ankita feel him as a 'special' friend in her life.

Ankita gets admission in a reputed institution in Mumbai for MBA while Abhi gets a call letter from CUSAT. Cochin. They were destined to separate. Her family decided to shift to Mumbai. Abhi's final pleading to her for staying in touch even if  they are in two distant cities was rejected by Ankita.Few day after Ankita finds Abhi as dead in news paper. He was overdosed with alcohol himself.

The next part of story starts in Mumbai. She excells well in her acadamics but slowly the story reveal her symptoms of drifting into Bipolar disorder. Her past traumas still haunting her. She repeatedly feel the regret of rejecting Abhi's pleadings.
She started accepting that no love is to be belittled. She drowns into severe depression. She survives two suicide attempts and finally she is in mental hospital where she gets her healing from past traumas,  She finds the meaning of living and existence, how determination helps us to survive scorching parts of fate. The life there gives her a new life.

My rating (4.5/5)
